It was a 2-week cruise and I found it very interesting, but there was some rough waters off San
Francisco. There was alot of sea sickness. I was an assistant loader on a 40-mm gun. We went out of
Treasure Island and had a weekend at Long Beach so I cou d visit my Aunt & Uncle. Another highlight
was riding on the new California Zepher to Oakland. I came from Omaha, Nebraska. We had a couple of
car loads of reservists from the mid-west. I would like to be on the mailing list to receive any future mail
ngs.

I'd like to say hello to all of you who I served with on the USS Stickell DDR888. I thorougly enjoyed my
tour, especially the world cruise. I treasure my cruise book that was put together by a great bunch of
guys who did a tremendous job. And who would 't want to relive crossing the equator, what fun! CDR
Boyd was a great sport, for a "polywog". I left the Stickell in Norfolk shortly after the first of the year
1955 to join the group of vessels being deployed to WESTPAC. After giving final farewells o my friends,
I joined the crew on the USS Trathen DD530. I applied for and received shore duty in 1956 at the Fleet
Sonar School in San Diego. Mustered out there in October 1957 and returned to Colorado. I would like
to hear from anyone who either reme bers me or not.

I really enjoyed starting my life off as a sailor on the U.S.S. Stickell. Traveling out of Norfolk VA. to
Guantamano Bay to St Thomas in the Virgin Islands to Port Au Prince Haiti as my beginning days as a
sailor. I remember the 24 hrs. that I sat in the " 38 loaded off Cuba. The bumboats trading anything for
anything. The Med Cruise where cultures clashed in Beruit Lebanon to Greece to Turkey anchored in the
Bosphorus. I remember CAptain Jacques taking us ashore on an island off Spain to play a ball game and
the warm beer in the hot sun going to my head. Things such as these make fond memories while chipping
decks and bulkheads don't seem so bad 40 years later. Goodbye old friend, your decks speak volumns...

I am proud to have served aboard the Stickell. I have fond memories of the "round the world" cruise of
1954. It would be nice to turn back the clock and re-live those days,(some of them, at least). I would be
more than happy to correspond with anyone w o was on board during my tour of duty. Especially the
Quartermasters.

Don't remember exact month reported aboard. Thought
it was in the Spring, but don't remember serving under
anyone but Cdr. Thayer. Hope I haven't signed in
before. Have seen this site before, but it is greatly
improved. Keep it up, and thanks.
